The 5th International Conference on Muscle Energetics, held July 13-17 in Burlington VT, was an unqualified success in bringing together scientists engaged in many aspects of muscle research - especially those related to the molecular basis of cardiac and skeletal muscle diseases. Over one hundred participants assembled in historic buildings in a quiet corner of the University of Vermont campus, near the central green. Over 50 oral presentations were given in 7 symposia, covering structural biology of muscle, structural dynamics of myosin and actin, thin and thick filament regulation, muscle energetics, structure-function relationships in diseases, and new directions in muscle genomics and proteomics. Over 40 posters were presented as well - many of which were accompanied by brief oral presentations. Festive evening venues offered the participants a chance to relax and get better acquainted. The festivities included an outdoor BBQ and jazz concert on the patio of Fleming Museum, a sunset cruise on Lake Champlain, and a banquet and ENCORE musical production in Ira Allen Chapel in honor of Norman Alpert, whose long illustrious career in medical research, administration and business has been an inspiration to many. The conference concluded with a splendid farewell banquet at bucolic Shelburne Farms on Lake Champlain - an evening highlighted by a spirited recognition ceremony by mischievous Justin Molloy and Christine Cremo. |
